7:16 am
this really turns your stomach. mike jeffrey says candidly we go after the cool kids. we go after the attractive all american kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. he goes on to say a lot of people don't belong in our clothes and they can't belong. are we exclusionary? absolutely. okay. when you heard that, what was your reaction? >> well, my first reaction is number one you know we talk a lot about bullying in schools with children but i think this is a classic example that bullying can happen even amongst adults. i think it's unfortunate at a time when not only is bullying a prominent issue in our culture we have children as young as five, six, and seven years old developing eating disorders that an adult could make a comment like this. it's extremely devicive and shocking. >> and you work with teenagers, kids that are sensitive to these issues. a comment like that how deeply could that effect them?
7:17 am
>> i think in our culture it's pervasive. at a time when kids are developing we say kids are simple. they want to feel special and don't want to get in trouble. it's pretty straightforward. so when their bodies are changing, it's really important that they feel like they have a place to fit in. and a social outlet and the way they dress and appear with their peer groups is extremely important to them. when you have someone that is perpetuating this ideal image of being a certain size or shape especially when they go through pubberty it's quite dangerous. and quite frankly i think it's a little interesting study that kids could do is to look at the size and say a size eight at abercrombie take it to other stores and do a comparison to see just if whether or not the clothes are consistent because i promise you the clothes at abercrombie are actually made quite smaller than most typical clothes so there is an
7:18 am
inconsistency there. >> balancing that against the wants when it comes to summer to have that beach body. what is the balance there? how can people embrace that? >> i think it's one of the times of years where it gets warmer so we're wearing less clothing shorts, tank tops and of course swim suits. what is important for people to understand this the time of year you don't lose sight of balance. you need to be able to eat to fuel your body and have fun on things like fourth of july and going to picnics. at the same time as a parent it's important to emphasize if you pick an activity for your child make sure it's something they really enjoy doing. they are much more likely to stick with it and have fun while they are doing it. >> i think it's difficult for parents nowadays. you hear about the issues with childhood obesity even the first lady is going after that. but then they're also having to balance that with not having their kids go to extreme measures. >> yeah and in the business i work in, i've heard many horror
7:19 am
stories. specifically related to the antiobesity campaign. i think what happens in our culture people tend to take an extreme approach. i've heard things such as teachers bringing in scales into the classroom and weighing children in front of each other and really that is not the right approach. it's important to be able to again talk about what real balance is which is fueling your body and allowing yourself to have fun at the same time. >> all right jennifer we have a link to summit eating disorders on our website at cbs5.com. just click on links and numbers. we'll be right back.
